Twenty-three Southeast Asians learn and share about climate change adaptation in watersheds
LOS BAÑOS, Philippines – Twenty-three researchers, technical officers/experts, and academics from five Southeast Asian countries convened at the Southeast Asian Regional Center for Graduate Study and Research in Agriculture (SEARCA) for the Training-workshop on Climate Change Adaptation in Watersheds for Water, Food and Environmental Security in Southeast Asia. The training-workshop, which was mainly sponsored by the Asia-Pacific Adaptation Network (APAN) with SEARCA, took place on 15-18 October 2013 at SEARCA, College, Los Baños, Laguna, Philippines.

According to Dr. Gil C. Saguiguit, Jr., SEARCA Director, in remarks read by Dr. Virginia R. Cardenas, SEARCA Deputy Director, organizing this training-workshop with APAN is important because the sound management of watersheds, which make up the bulk of land area in Southeast Asia, is critical in addressing challenges in water availability for food production. Dr. Rex Victor O. Cruz, Chancellor of the University of the Philippines Los Baños (UPLB) and Philippine Representative to the Governing Board of SEARCA who is also Technical Coordinator of the training-workshop, further underscored the value of healthy, sustainable and resilient watersheds in soil conservation, biodiversity conservation, and climate change mitigation, which bear upon the health of the economy and of the people of a country.
